Col Jeremiah W Coveney, sometimes spelled Conveney and Conveny, enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in Co A 28th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and rose up to the rank of Lt Col. He was severely wounded on May 18, 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, VA and later discharged for those wounds on Nov 30, 1864.

Conveney was very active within the Fenian Brotherhood and did participate in the Fenian invasion of Canada, June 1866. He served on the Cambridge city Council for eight years, four years in the Massachusetts Legislature, two years as the MA Governor's private secretary and two years as state gas commissioner.

From 1881 to 1886 he was the chairman of the MA Democratic State Committee.

In later life, he was appointed the Collector for the Port of Boston and at the time of his death was the Postmaster for Boston.
