Born in Wellston, he had been employed at state hospitals in Toledo and Athens for 27 years. He retired from the Athens State Hospital in 1960 because of ill health. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Athens; a member of the Eagles, the Legion of Moose, and past governor, the Hocking Valley Sportsman's Club and a past counselor of the D of A's at Wellston. He was a first lieutenant in the Athens unit of the Civil Air Patrol and served overseas in the army during World War I.
Surviving are his wife, Naomi Simmons, Barnes; five sisters, Mrs. Vona Russell, Pomeroy; Opal, Ella, and Etta, all of Columbus; and Elva, Pennsylvania; a brother, William J., of Columbus. His parents, a brother and a sister died previously.
Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the First Christian Church by the Rev. Joe B. Maffett. Friends may call at the Hughes funeral home after Sunday noon. Burial will be in the Hebardville cemetery.
