Mercedese Davis was born on September 7, 1916, in Goodlett, Texas, when her father, Joseph Claude Davis, was 33 and her mother, Julia Bell (Toten) Davis, was 32.

At the time she had four older brothers Walter Elmer Davis, Edmond Claude Davis, Delmer Doyle Davis, George Caswell 'Shorty' Davis, and one sister Tressa Davis. She would have two more surviving brothers follow her; Robert Carl Davis b1919 and Everette Arthur Davis b1926.

On 12 Dec 1932 at 16, she married Alvin Nathan 'Alvie' Duncan in Hardeman County, Texas.

Mercedes Davis Duncan at 18 was severely injured in a truck accident in 1934 in Clovis, New Mexico when the truck with almost the entire family in it, blew a front tire and went off a bridge, severely injuring most members of the family. She received multiple skull fractures and had brain injuries that plagued her until her death in September 1938.

June 8, 1936 she gave birth to her only child Sandra Mercedes Duncan.

Mercedes passed away just over two years later.

Some family members stated they felt her husband may have intentionally over-medicated her for pain which may have contributed to her passing, but there was no coroner's inquest or autopsy.

Family members continued to support the notions that over-medication may have hastened her passing.

They were further frustrated and angered as she died on in the evening of September 4th, and her husband had her buried on the morning of September 5th before many of her siblings who were notified by telegram, could travel back to Quanah to attend her funeral. Death certificate validated she died on the 4th, and was removed for burial on the 5th.

Mr. Duncan then relocated with his infant daughter Sandra away from the area, and Sandra grew up in California.

Mercedes sister Tressa, stayed in touch with Sandra through the years by mail and telephone and shared her mother's life stories and helped her know the mother she never knew.
