Before leaving Berlin, Henry had completed the 3rd Grade in school, but did not attend school after coming to America. He taught himself English. About 1889 at the age of 12, he went to work at a meat packing plant, shoveling out the slaughtering room.
Henry married Agnes Curran on 28 June 1899.
In 1911, Henry was transferred to a job at the Cudahy packing plant in Wichita as a supervisor. He retired there after working for the same company for 50 years.
He was a Presbyterian, and a member of the International Order Of Odd Fellows. He enjoyed smoking a cigar or pipe after dinner, and tinkering with his old car, a 1937 Hudson Terraplane. He bought the car new for $992.70 and drive it for 30 years.
Henry was the father of six children and was very proud of the fact that all of them graduated from high school. He always said he was very lucky. When he wrote letters to his children, he signed them, "Happy Go Lucky Pop".
