He was born on Silvermine, Nantahala Twp., Swain County NC to John Patton Grant and Georgia Ann Grant (his death Cert. says her maiden name was Adams but she was married 3 times, see her memorial for clarification). Swain Co, NC Death Records Book 17 page 58

He was named for the governor of NC, Zebulon Vance.

His twin Brother was Edward Harrison Grant (Edward married Texie's sister, Nellie; 2 brothers married sisters from the other family).

When Zeb was 30, he married Texie Jane Grant (then age 23), the daughter of John Wesley Grant and Nancy Elvira Franklin Grant in Cherokee County, North Carolina. Officiating was T.N. Bates, Justice of Peace; witnesses: Ella Simonds, Jess J. Grant [Texie's brother], Mrs. A.M. Simonds. They were both residents of Swain County with Wesser being the Post Office.

They lived where Lost Mine Campground is now in the Silvermine Community of Swain County, NC. He was engineer on the railroad, meaning he drove the train. His family rode the train free because of that. He built the white house on the right side of the road which is just before the bridge (just after the road splits).

His wife,Texie, always wore a wrist watch his friend from the War gave him after Zeb died. The friend gave it to him and said to hold it and keep it if I don't return (as his friend was going into battle).
