ESTHER HODGKINSON passed away in the early hours of December 21, 2016.

Esther's character was shaped in childhood by her loving, musical, and literary parents and brothers; living through the Great Depression and World War II also informed her world view. Esther was devoted to music her entire life, as a pianist, organist, teacher, and listener.

She graduated from the Music Conservatory at Oberlin College, where she met her husband, Bob, a trombone player. Esther played the organ at Messiah Lutheran Church in Lyndhurst for decades. She was also a voracious reader and loved Scrabble. She volunteered as a reader to schoolchildren. Like her mother before her, Esther was an active lifelong member of the P.E.O., an organization which advocates for women's education. Esther was also a breast cancer survivor. Esther was known for being spirited, stubborn, fierce, sharp-witted, creative, and expressive. She was a fantastic storyteller and wrote beautiful, funny letters. Esther was a tireless and uncomplaining advocate for her family, and was never afraid to speak up for what was right. The love she and Bob demonstrated, in so many ways, for their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and each other created an unshakable foundation for their family; it is the gift that keeps on giving.

Esther is survived by her children John, Randy, and Robin, and brothers John Kissane and James Kissane, 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
