Statesman, 1st President of Palau. He served from 2 March 1981 until his assassination. Prior to becoming president he received his advanced education at the University of Hawaii. In 1970 he was sworn in as Deputy District Administrator for Palau. Following the territory's adoption of a constitution in July 1980, he took office. He was assassinated shortly after his re-election to a second term. He was shot in the driveway of his home by an unidentified gunman. In March 2000 former presidential candidate and convicted felon John O. Ngiraked claimed responsibility for the conspiracy. He is best remembered for promoting the Compact of Free Association with the United States and to make Palau nuclear free.
