Gene was born on January 6, 1930 in Montague County to Edward and Georgia Morris. He moved to Canyon as a child, where he graduated from Canyon High School. He worked as a truck driver for many years before working for the highway department and settling into his career as a groundskeeper for West Texas A & M University. On July 20, 2008 he married his wife, Lucille here in Amarillo. Gene loved bluegrass music and enjoyed working outdoors, especially on his tractor. Most of all, he loved his Lord.

He is survived by his wife Lucille Morris of Amarillo; step-son, Ronnie Rucker of Amarillo; step-daughter, Carol Waits and husband Mike of Atlanta, Georgia and Wilma Rucker of Boone, NC; 4 step-great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; brother, “Buff” Morris and wife Lynne of Ben Franklin, TX; daughters, Serena Sandt and husband Carol of Amarillo and Robbie Harrison and husband Greg of Amarillo; 1 granddaughter and 1 great grandson and 7 great grandchildren.
