DAVID KINEN, 46, of Atlantic, died Saturday, Dec. 17th, at Atlantic Specialty Care. Funeral services for DAVID KINEN will be held 10:30-a.m. Wed., Dec. 21st, at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, in Atlantic. Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.
Visitation with the family is from 5-until 7-p.m. Tues., Dec. 20th, at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, in Atlantic.

His mother – Shirley Kinen, of Largo, FL.
His brothers – Doug (Gwen) Kinen, of Indian Rocks Beach, FL., & Dennis (Judy) Kinen, of Council Bluffs.
His sister – Diane (Gerhardt) Marburg, of Atlantic.

David C. Kinen, 46, of Atlantic, Iowa, and formerly of Chillicothe, Missouri, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2016, at Atlantic Specialty Care in Atlantic, Iowa.

David Christopher Kinen was born December 22, 1969, in Atlantic, Iowa, to Eugene and Shirley (Bennett) Kinen. He attended Atlantic High School and graduated with the class of 1988. He then went to Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, where he was a member of the wrestling team for two years. He finished his education degree at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri.

He began his teaching career at Holt County R-11 in Mound City, MO. His second year as a teacher was at Meadville R-IV. He then began a twelve year teaching/coaching career at Chillicothe R-11 School District. While the wrestling coach, he led two teams to top 15 state finishes. Additionally, he had 37 individual state qualifiers, 12 state medalists and 1 state champion. After David was diagnosed with ALS in 2009, he continued to teach and coach until he was no longer able to get into the wrestling room.

David was inducted into the Missouri Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2013 and into the Atlantic/CAM Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2015. He was also a member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church and he was very active in promoting kid’s programs. David also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Preceding David in death were his grandparents; his father, Eugene; and his uncles, Chuck Kinen and Roy McLaughlin.

Those surviving David are his mother, Shirley Kinen of Largo, FL; his siblings, Doug (Gwen) Kinen of Indian Rock Beach, FL, Dennis (Judy) Kinen of Council Bluffs, IA, and Diana (Gerhard) Marburg of Atlantic, IA; nieces, Alexis, Megan, Alison (Ali) and Erin; a great-niece, Sutton; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. David inspired many students and lived by his “Never Quit” motto.

Visitation with family will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 20, 2016, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 21, 2016, at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, Iowa.

Burial will be in the SS Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Atlantic, Iowa.

Memorials may be left to the families wishes.
