Larry Wayne Sharpe, 83, of Hickory, NC, entered into his eternal rest December 16, 2016, at Trinity Ridge Nursing Home.

Larry was born November 24, 1933, in Hiddenite, NC, to the late Henry Clay Sharpe and Dora Thomas Sharpe.

Larry was a 1952 graduate of Old Town High School in Winston-Salem, and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1959. Larry was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving 1954-1956 in Munich, Germany, with a specialty in cryptography. He was honorably discharged in 1962, after fulfilling an eight year service obligation, including Army Reserve service.

Larry was a member of Faith Evangelical and Reformed Church in the Brookford township of Hickory, where he married his beloved wife, Jeanette Whitener. He served on the church Consistory board, and aided the church through the years with church construction and building projects, as well as helping in acquiring neighboring land to expand the church grounds.

Larry was a businessman throughout his life, coming to Hickory and partnering with his brother, Jerry, in the Hickory Truck Garage, located in the Highland area. The brothers also owned and operated State Motor Lines trucking company, and owned and operated Hickory White Trucks, later known as Western Carolina Truck Center on Highway 70 in Hickory. In the late 1970s, Larry started a new venture, a convenience store named Village Kwik Stop in Mountain View, operating for 23 years as the anchor store for a neighborhood shopping center, South Pointe Center.

Larry's love for life and his spirit was visible in many ways. He never met a stranger, and could discuss and talk and talk with folks to no end. He was friendly, passionate, generous, and always working for himself and his family. He enjoyed family cookouts, was a fan of Tar Heel basketball and football games, and enjoyed family vacations with Jeanette, Wayne and Larry.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in passing by his wife of 36 years, Jeanette, two brothers, Conrad Sharpe and Hubert Sharpe, and three nephews, Jerry A. Sharpe, Jr., Timothy Sharpe, and Brian Sharpe.

Larry is survived by his two sons, Wayne L. Sharpe of Hickory, NC, and Larry W. Sharpe and his wife Debbie, of Knoxville, TN, and Larry's grandchildren, Macy Elizabeth Sharpe and Jacob William (J.W.) Sharpe. Larry is also survived by his brother and sister in law, Jerry and Juanita Sharpe of Granite Falls, NC.

The family wishes to express their love and gratitude to the nurses, CNAs, and supporting staff of Trinity Ridge Nursing Home in Mountain View, where Larry resided for the past three years, four months, and seventeen days, in the "Memory Wing", with others enduring Dementia and stroke recovery.

The family will receive friends Monday, December 19, 2016 at Bass-Smith Funeral Home from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Faith Evangelical and Reformed Church with the Rev. Dr. Harry Griffin officiating. Intombment will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be pleased if your memorial gifts were directed to Faith Evangelical and Reformed Church, 204 19th Ave., SW, Hickory, NC, 28602, or to Trinity Ridge Nursing Home's Employee Endowment Fund, 2140 Medical Park Dr., Hickory, NC, 28602.
