Harry William Horndt, 94, of Columbus, Texas died on December 15, 2016 at the Trucare Living Center in Columbus following a valiant struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was the husband of Doris (Mettke) Horndt. They shared a wonderful 70 years of marriage together.

Born and raised in Columbus, Texas, the son of Charles and Ella (Kansteiner) Horndt, he was a lifelong resident of Columbus.

In his early years, Harry was employed with TXDOT for 35 years and worked as a draftsman. After that he would continue to work as a long hauler in which his lovely wife would sometimes join him. Once she retired, Harry and Doris started traveling the United States by going to various states including Colorado and Alaska. One of their favorite camping spots was Lake Somerville where they met numerous people. There was not a stranger that Harry ever met.

Harry met his wife, Doris Mettke through a blind date. She was actually dating someone else, when Harry Horndt captured her heart, plus he had a car. They were married on December 15, 1945 at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Harry was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. His second love was camping, traveling and fishing. His first love of course was his wife Doris. Harry and Doris always loved listening to polka music. He will always be remembered for his wit, humor, and knowledge of fixing things and how you could see him thinking about it, measure it in his mind. He was such a social person and his friends will truly, truly miss him.
