Her siblings all preceded her in death; Glenn Werner (Faybelle Small), Velma Werner/Welch (Melvin), Shorty Werner (Opal Walker), Edna Werner/Bond (Melvin) and Mick Werner (Norene Hungerford). The family returned to the Helena, Oklahoma area while Martha was still quite young. They moved to the Kealiher farm just East of Fish’s Park and then to the Werner farm just North of Star School which is where Martha grew up. She attended Star School through seventh grade and then Helena High School from which she graduated. She married Boyd VanWye on May 16, 1935. She and Boyd lived and raised their family on a farm three miles East of Helena. Their children are Beverly VanWye/Hughes (Jim Hughes) Emery, South Dakota, Dick VanWye (Marjorie Fast) Burrton, Kansas, Sue VanWye (deceased), Bob VanWye, (Zeta Baker) Cassville, Missouri. Martha and Boyd left the farm and moved their family to Wichita in the fall of 1956. Boyd died in June, 1967 and Martha married David Allen in September 1971. They retired and moved to Table Rock Lake in 1982. Dave died in March 1984. Martha then married Melvin Welch in December 1992 and moved back to Helena. Following Melvin’s death in April 2010 Martha moved back to her beloved home on the Table Rock Lake where she lived until her death.

Martha was an accomplished pianist, a professional seamstress, an office manager retired from Saint Francis Hospital of Wichita and much more. She was a Christian and an active church member all her life and was a member of First Baptist Church in Helena at time of death. She also attended First Baptist Church at Cassville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings and one daughter, Sylvia Sue VanWye.

She is survived by three children, seven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law JoAn VanWye/Burton, Longmont, Colorado and Norene Hungerford/Werner, Helena, Oklahoma. She also leaves behind many step-children, step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Martha wasn’t perfect but as her oldest grandchild said recently, “She was as close as anybody I’ve ever known.”

We dearly loved her and now have one more reason for looking forward to heaven.

Thank you Lord for Martha.
