OBITUARY
October 12, 1943

John Oliver Morton was born November 23, 1873 at Paris, Illinois to Mr. and Mrs. George Morton. Passed away October 5, 1943 at the age of 69 years. He leaves behind his wife, Lottie F. Morton, and only son, Fred of Orlando, Florida, a sister Mrs. Effie Bolick of Columbia Falls, two half-sisters, Mrs. Nellie Motichka of Whitefish and Mrs. Maggie Lowe of Klamath Falls Oregon, a half brother Bert Brinkerhoff of Columbia Falls, and three granddaughters.

As a young man, Mr. Morton spent several years in the south working at his trade as carpenter. While there in 1898 he joined the armed forces during the Spanish-American war. After being mustered out he arrived in Columbia Falls in 1901. He was united in marriage to Lottie F. Haines at Columbia Falls September 1, 1904. Moved to Kalispell in 1914 and in 1927 became a resident of Somers. Acquired a home site 11 miles south of Bigfork on the east lake shore in 1931 where he built their home and grew a fine fruit orchard.

He was a member for many years of the Masonic Order at Columbia Falls, also the United Brethren church. He was loved, honored, and respected by his very large circle of friends, was a good, even-tempered citizen and neighbor who always found good in everyone he knew.

Tribute:
He was genial companion, a true friend and a devoted, loving husband and father. His life was so marked by righteousness, manliness and gentleness that he was a living example of this verse:
"To live as gently as I can,
To be, to matter where, a man.
To take what comes of good or ill
And cling to faith and honor still."

He brought nothing into the world. He took nothing out. But if friendly service to fellowmen can be measured - and doubt not that the Almighty measures it - he gave much to the world.

"What we have done for ourselves alone died with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal?
