On Sept. 15, 1997, Elizabeth Calfee of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., died peacefully in her sleep at Bay Breeze Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.

Though the last years were difficult for Elizabeth, her family and those who cared for her, the true gentleness of her nature and genuine love for those around her were a blessing. She will be remembered as a special friend to those who attended her day-to-day needs.

Elizabeth was born of Hungarian immigrants in Logan County, W.Va., on Dec. 20, 1924. After high school she worked as a nurse's aide and in September 1944 she married Walter Calfee in Baltimore. After Walter's separation from the U.S. Navy, he and Elizabeth made their home in Northwest Florida. Thirty-five years were spent raising a family in Fort Walton Beach.

During her years as a homemaker, Elizabeth was a loving Christian and a member of First United Methodist Church of Fort Walton Beach. Her life was dedicated to following the Word of God and being loving and supportive of her husband, Walter, and to raising her children.

Liz, as she was affectionately known to her friends, always put her family first. She had an exceptional green thumb and enjoyed swapping cuttings of plants with family and friends. Liz was an avid bowler who at times bowled as many as 21 games a week. Before her illness she was a member of the WIBC and the OCWBA, and a member of two women's bowling leagues and numerous mixed leagues. She will be remembered for her dedication, consistency and steady performance both on and off the lanes.

She is survived by her son, Anthony, and daughter-in-law Linda Calfee of Destin, Fla.; daughter, Adele Armitage of Shalimar, Fla.; sisters, Goldie and husband Mel Skaggs of Liberty, Texas, and Julia and husband Gene Wilburn of Fayetteville, W.Va.; sisters-in-law, Laura Higdon of Jay, Fla., Christine Madarasz of Charleston, W.V., and Nellie Brantley of Brewton, Ala.; grandchildren, Craig, Heather, Tina and Debbie; and one great-grandchild, Laura Anne.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at McLaughlin Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. David P. Dabria officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Burial will follow in Jay Cemetery at 3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer's Association of Northwest Florida, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548, in memory of Elizabeth M. Calfee.
