John MacLean was a son of Mary and Duncan MacLean. Duncan was a farmer and a miller. At the 1891 census Mary and Duncan MacLean were living in Lot 9 of Prince County, P.E.I. The enumerated family members residing at the MacLean farm were Duncan (age 54), Mary (48), their seven progeny [Allan (9), Maggie (10), Annie (13), Duncan (18), Donald (21), John (25) and Roderick (28). Roderick was accompanied by his wife Margaret (29) and their 2 year old daughter Flora.~The P.E.I. PARO Marriage Registry noted John MacLean and Mary Ann MacDonald were both residing in Lot 9 of West Prince County at Brae when they signed their Marriage Bonds in 1891. In 1901 John and Mary were still residing in Lot 9 of West Prince County. On May 1, 1901 the census enumerator reported the home was a 9 room wood-frame dwelling with 4 wood-frame outbuildings located on 96 owned acres in the community of Brae near Brae Public School. Enumerated residents and declared birthdates were: parents John D. [b:12-5-1866] and Mary A. [b:12-5-1872], their two children - Margaret A. ("Maggie") [b:8-31-1891] and Angus [b:3-18-1896] and two other MacLean relatives - Hugh M.D. (widower) [b:9-26-1840] and Annie [b:10-2-1884]. All residents declared their birthplace was P.E.I. and religious affiliation was the Church of Scotland. The 1921 census shows the Lot 9 MacLean farm was located on Milo Road in the sub-district of Brae. The family on the farm at the 1921 enumeration were John (55), Mary Ann (48), Angus (25), Dermot (17), Lawrence (15) and Hannah Loretta (14).
