Known as Ophelia to her parents, siblings and their families, she likes to tell people that she was born in a covered wagon near the Oklahoma/Texas border but her birth was not registered until the family was settled in Texas.
Ophelia's family knew the Milligan family for quite a few years. Family history states that Ophelia's brother, Roy, and her not-quite-so-future-husband used to run moonshine across the Texas border. Her sister, Ruby, married Lester's brother so she and Ruby were sisters-ih-law as well as sisters. Ophelia and Lester married quite a few years later and became parents of six sons (one, Lester Wayne, having died in infancy).
Ophelia and Lester came to California from Texas sometime in 1943-1944. Her son Jack knows that it was during WWII. They came to California, to the West Side of the Central Valley, west of Mendota and joined family who had already migrated to the area. Lester worked on the ranches and eventually became an auto mechanic. When Ophelia (who became known by her first name, Alice, professionally and to friends) started working, she worked on the presses in various laundries.
Ophelia and Lester lived in various areas of California, from Mendota to Avenal, Los Banos, Atascadero, Monterey County and eventually settled in Redding, CA. She became an avid walker in Redding. She took her first airplane ride at age 86 when she flew to Texas with her brother and a niece to visit the two of her sisters who had remained in Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester, and two sons, Lester Wayne (1937) and Charles Ray (2014).
