Mr. Charles Leon “C.L.” Acuff, 81, passed away Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Hospice of the Piedmont. He was the loving husband of the late Emma Sue (Emerson) Acuff, to whom he was married for 61 years.

Mr. Acuff was born February 26, 1935 in Springfield, MO to the late James Chester “Pete” and Goldie Omega (Dixon) Acuff. He was a graduate of Walnut Grove High School in Walnut Grove, MO and received his B.S in Education from Southwest Missouri State, as well as his M.S in Education from Southern Illinois University. Mr. Acuff was a pastor for over 20 years in the Church of God, and worked for the Guilford County School system in special education and as a substitute teacher from 1990-2011. Mr. Acuff also worked in the insurance industry from 1973 until he passed away.

He attended Hickory Chapel Wesleyan Church.

Grandpa, Poppy, Daddy, and Pastor were a few of his titles. Mr. Acuff was beloved by his family, those he served in his congregations, and even by his insurance customers. He delighted in his children and grandchildren, and was quick with a hug, smile, and a “hello, honey” when he saw any of them. He supported his children and grandchildren in their various pursuits, attending sporting events and dramatic productions with equal enthusiasm, and displaying the drawings of his grandson Alex around his home. He was always encouraging them in their education, whether they were five years old, or twenty- five. His favorite pastimes included reading on history and theology, studying maps and atlases, playing Roy Acuff on the record player, doing word search puzzles, and watching Duke basketball or Braves baseball. He loved to sit and talk with his family and it was rare that he got through a group gathering without crying from joy at a story or memory. The Acuff family will fondly remember his kindness, humility, intelligence, and the depth of his faith in Christ. His passion for the Gospel is evident in some of his final words to his youngest daughter-- “I know who is in charge, and you do too.”

Mr. Acuff is survived by four daughters, Vici A. Hill and her husband, Gary of Archdale, Shelly A. Acuff of Archdale, Janine S. Acuff of Archdale, and Libby A. Davis and husband Brian of Asheville; 12 grandchildren, Shawn and husband Ricky, Heather and husband Eric, Erik, Craig, Sam, Caroline, Julia, Alexander, Whitney, Will, Nick, and Frank; two great grandchildren, Ashton, and Mabry; two sisters, Betty Crosswhite and husband Ralph, and Ruth Mooney; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and six sisters.

Though his family grieves the loss of a father and grandfather, they rest in the knowledge that Mr. Acuff is now worshipping in the presence of his Savior, and are confident that the first thing he heard upon departing this life was, “Well done my good and faithful servant.” They are happy to know that he is reunited with his beloved Emma.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 14, 2016 in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service with the Reverend Brian Davis, Reverend Bob Ferguson and Reverend Taylor Humphries officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. at the funeral home

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Archdale Building
Fund PO Box 4400 High Point, NC 27263 or to Hospice of the Piedmont 1801 Westchester Dr. High Point, NC 27262.
