Ellie Juanita Coleman Mikell was born on Thursday, August 28, 1924, at home in Olustee, FL to Russell Iseah and Mamie Ila Pringle Coleman. She was delivered into this world by her maternal grandmother, Emma Carroll Pringle, who was a midwife. She was the second of five daughters born to Russell and Mamie.

In the early 1940's while working at Camp Blanding, J.W. Mikell met Ellie’s Uncle Luell Pringle. Luell told J.W. he had a beautiful niece that he would like him to meet, Miss Ellie Juanita Coleman of Lake Butler, FL. She had been known as Ellie for the first 18 years of her life, but J.W. really liked the name Juanita so that is the name she used ever since. They were married at the home of the judge in Lake Butler, FL on Tuesday, October 27, 1942. J.W. passed away just one week after celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary in 2004.

Mrs. Mikell was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her husband, children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was an accomplished seamstress and known for her wonderful Southern cooking with plenty of fresh vegetables from the garden. She was a true country girl, enjoying fishing and riding through the hunting woods looking for deer. She spent most of her adult life on the family farm in the First District in Dixie County which she loved dearly. Between 1956 and 1972 she lived in Jacksonville, FL, Roanoke, VA, and Gainesville, FL. Mrs. Mikell had been a member of McCall’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Branford, FL since September 25, 1946. McCall’s Chapel was very special to her and she enjoyed the many years of worship and celebrations at the Chapel. She was the former Queen of the Suwannee River Red Hat Hoppers, which was made up of a group of women from McCall’s Chapel.

Mrs. Mikell passed from this life to heaven on Sunday, December 11, 2016 at Tri-County Nursing Home, Trenton, FL.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Lettie Deas, Wilma Allen, Malovene Elrod, and Ruby Henry.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda (Bernard) Dalton of Orlando, Vera (Frank) Sodek of Alachua, Donna (Mickey) Mullins of Branford; a son, Randy Mikell of Branford; eight grandchildren, Susan Nims, Jill Page, Guy Dalton, Amy Montenegro, Adam Mikell, Aaron Mikell, Josh Mullins, and Matthew Mullins; ten great-grandchildren, Brittany, Kevin, Chelsea, Devin, Guy, Kayla, Eiston, Madison, Austin and Ella; and one great-great-grandson, Baylin.

The family would like to thank the staff at Tri-County Nursing Home and Haven Hospice of Chiefland for the wonderful care they have given Mrs. Mikell over the past few months. Also, a special thanks to her friend and roommate, Evelyn Feagle, for her love and support.
