Obituary in the Daily Press of Escanaba, Michigan, published July 2, 2010, with additions in brackets:

GLADSTONE -John R. "Jack" Rohde, 85, of 2600 S. Hill Road, Gladstone, (formerly of Rock and Chicago) passed away Thursday morning June 24, 2010, in Elgin, Ill., following a brief illness. He had spent the last month of his life in the Chicago area at the home of his daughter [Laurie].
Jack was born Nov. 15, 1924, in Chicago, to John "Steve" Rohde and Lauretta Telkes Rohde, who passed away shortly after his birth. His father passed on in 1962. He graduated from Coonley Elementary School and attended Lane Tech High School. Almost 35 years later, he returned to finish his education and in 1977 received his high school diploma from Bay de Noc.

[Around 1955 John was married to Janet Hathaway, the daughter of Parma and Lilla Jean (Nickell) Hathaway, also of Chicago, with whom he had three children.]

From 1940 until moving to Rock after marrying his [second] wife Eleanor (Lusardi) in 1972, Jack was employed in the trucking industry in Chicago, including several years as part owner of Rohde Cartage. Upon moving to Rock, he was one of the first people hired at the new K-Mart in Marquette, where he worked for over 10 years as the manager of the Warehouse. After retiring from K-Mart he drove for the Delta County Senior Center Bus Program.
In 1998 El and Jack relocated to Escanaba and shortly afterwards to Gladstone. During their retirement years, they volunteered with several organizations, including the Upper Peninsula Service Continuum, RSVP of Escanaba, Reading Buddy Program for Cameron Elementary School, and assisted with the Gladstone After School Program, volunteered at the Heart Health Screening Clinic, and was a volunteer for the Marquette General Home and Health Hospice. Eleanor preceded him in death by a short 6 weeks, passing on May 2, the day before their 38th anniversary.
Jack enjoyed World War II films and books, traveling to casinos with many friends, and playing a wide variety of card games. During his years in Illinois he also was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, and a lifelong Cub's and Bears fan. As a boy scout leader in the 1970's he was inducted into the honorary society of Order of the Arrow.

Surviving Jack is his son, Mark Rohde of Buffalo Grove, Ill.; and daughters, Laurie Rohde of River Grove, Ill., and Linda Rohde of Pompano Beach, Fla. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Betty Vermote of Cornell. He leaves four grandchildren, Kenny (Nicole) Shogren of Chicago, Carla (Donald) Snyder of Lexington, Ky., Tiffany (Rocco) Martinelli of Algonquin, Ill., and Emily Silsby of Pompano Beach, Fla. He was looking forward to becoming a great-grandfather this fall, as both Tiffany and Carla are expecting their first children. His life was enriched by numerous nieces, nephews, many cousins, and countless friends. In addition to his parents and his widow, Jack was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Robert.
Jack's family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, from 2-3 p.m. at the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Escanaba, where Jack and El will be joined forever in a beautiful niche in the main building. Mark Rohde will be leading the memorial service.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Community Action Reading Buddy Program and Gladstone Library Learning Tree.
