GREENSBORO - Mrs. Margaret Amanda Weisner Durham, 101, was reunited with her husband, daughter, siblings, and Lord on December 26, 2014. Funeral services to celebrate her life will be at 11 a.m., December 31, at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church, with Dr. Pat Cronin officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30 at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm chapel.
Margaret was born in the family home on Glenwood Avenue, the first daughter of John O. and Bessie Lineberry Weisner. She met her future husband, John Durham, when she dropped her pencil at school and he picked it up for her. He fell in love with her beautiful blue eyes and feisty personality and married her in October of 1934 in Danville, VA. They spent 64 wonderful years together until his death in 2001. She and John were strong in their belief in Jesus Christ and were active members of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church (formerly Asheboro Street Baptist Church), where she participated in the choir and rarely missed a church service or activity. Margaret was an expert gardener, wonderful cook, and in recent years had discovered a love of bingo.
Together, she and John had two children, Peggy and John Jr. She worked various jobs, including a cashier position at BiRite, folding hosiery at Burlington Industries, and managing the hosiery department at the Charles Department store in downtown Greensboro. Her daughter, Peggy, eventually relocated to Florida, and her son, Buddy, settled in Texas. She and John moved to Florida in the 1970's and enjoyed many years in the warm weather while helping Peggy raise her children. They eventually moved back to Greensboro, but Margaret's love of Florida never waned.
She will be lovingly remembered by her son, John Durham, Jr., and wife, Virginia of Arlington, TX; grandchildren, Kendra Scalese of Greensboro, David Mauldin of Durham, Harold Durham of Arlington, TX, and Christine Muh of Mansfield, TX; brother, Tommy and wife Kitty Weisner of Greensboro; son-in-law, Bill Mauldin of Greensboro; eight greatgrandchildren; and one great - great-grandchild. In addition to her spouse, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Margaret (Peggy) Mauldin in January of 2014, one sister, and four brothers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friendly Avenue Baptist Church (Building Fund), 4800 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410.
