Margaret M. (Swope) Umpstead, a resident of Montgomery, Pa., entered into eternal life on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016, at the Valley View Nursing Center at Montoursville, Pa.

Born in Lewis Township, Northumberland Coounty, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Hugh and E. Ellen Gold Swope.

She was the widow of Richard E. Umpstead Sr., who preceded her in death on July 12, 2009, and was also preceded in death by her first husband, Paul E. Reaser.

Margaret was a 1946 graduate of the Turbotville-Lewis Township Vocational High School. She had been employed by the former Montgomery Mills and was the owner of the former Umpstead’s Family Restaurant.

She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran “Brick” Church at Montgomery where she was a member of the Ever Ready Sunday School class. For many years, Margaret coordinated dinners and food sales for the church. She was a member of the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Co. Auxiliary and a former judge of elections for the Clinton Township board of elections.

Margaret enjoyed gardening, sewing and was known for visiting the elderly and sharing the fruits of her garden with them.

She is survived by six children, Carolyn Girard, of Montgomery, Richard Umpstead Jr. of Muncy; Audrey Costill, of Montgomery; Linda and husband, Richard Bower, of Bellwood; Florence Wolfe, of Turbotville and Hugh of Montgomery. Margaret is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her son, Benjamin P. Reaser and by seven siblings, Robert Swope, Horace Swope, Harry Swope, Roy Swope, Lester Swope, Paul Swope and Florence Erdly.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. at the St. John Lutheran “Brick” Church, 196 Brick Church Road, Montgomery, with Rev. Viking Dietrich, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park.
