Thelma Virginia Longstreet Garrett, 94, was surrounded by loved ones when she passed away peacefully of natural causes at her home on Sunday morning the 27th of November, 2016.

She was born February 25, 1922, to Emil Nies and Bertha Pokert in Victor, California, where she lived until her marriage to James Longstreet in Astoria, Oregon in 1945.

They made their home in Lodi, California, and they had three children: Garret Longstreet, Tom Longstreet, and 10 years later she finally got a girl, Cindy. James was a builder of stucco homes and Thelma was a homemaker to their three children. James loved hunting in Idaho so much that they decided to move there and bought a farm in Middleton, Idaho. They were married for 22 years before James passed away in 1967.

Thelma continued to work the farm for two more years with her son, Tom, and daughter, Cindy. She then decided to sell it and bought a small home in Middleton where she and Cindy lived. She worked as a seamstress making some of the most gorgeous draperies. She also made beautiful outfits and dresses for her grandchildren.

Thelma, not having traveled much at the time, took Cindy to Europe and then later to Japan to visit Garret while he served in the U.S. Navy.

In 1976 Thelma married Alva Garrett. Alva was well known at Les Bois Park in Boise as a racehorse owner and trainer. With their children grown, they spent their years traveling and racing horses, tending sheep on their farm in Middleton and enjoying their ever growing family. Thelma and Alva enjoyed driving their grandchildren up to Bogus in the winter to go skiing, swim lessons in the summer, church camp, ballet performances, Christmas programs, teaching them table etiquette, and never missing a beat. Alva passed away in 2008 after 32 years of marriage.

Thelma loved being a homemaker for her family, cooking, sewing, knitting, and having family gatherings which continued throughout her life. She always had a huge family gathering on Christmas Eve to tell the story of baby Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas to all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. This was the highlight of her year and was always so happy to have her whole family together.

In her leisure she enjoyed chatting and laughing with family and friends, telling stories of her travels, visiting family and friends, eating sweets and going to card night, cultivating her flower beds, picking up her walnuts so the pesky squirrels don’t run off with them, being the family seamstress, cooking a lot, knitting hats; because the thought of a cold head did not go over well with her.

Having caught the travel bug, she was spontaneously fun and was always up for a trip to anywhere with little to no notice. And she knew how to pack a car with lots of treats for the trip!

She was proud to be German and kept her heritage alive by treating her family to authentic German foods while spouting off German phrases. She was never afraid to speak her mind but, with an enormous heart she opened her home to anyone who wanted to come over. She would make sure you left with a full belly, a smile, and probably something chocolate!

Thelma is survived by two of her children; Garret (Kathy) Longstreet and their children, and Cindy (Jim) Swartz and their children; her daughter-in-law, Penny Longstreet and her & Tom’s children; along with numerous great-grandchildren (too many to name).

The family would like to take this time to give a very special Thank-You to Thelma’s neighbors, Carol & Tom Smith and Marilyn & Jay Gibson. And heartfelt thanks to the entire hospice staff at Complete Hospice Care who so kindly helped care for Thelma in her final months.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, December 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Eagle Christian Church by Pastor Charles Crain of Eagle Christian Church where she worshiped her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
