As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, SP5 Abernathy served our country until February 2nd, 1969 in Binh Duong, South Vietnam. He was 21 years old and was married. It was reported that Jimmy was killed by friendly fire. His body was recovered. SP5 Abernathy is on panel 33W, line 035 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for one year.

His parents were the late James Floyd and Annie M Cornelius Abernathy. Annie was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, James Floyd Abernathy; son, SP5 Jimmy Edd Abernathy; sisters, Neva Cornelius Howard and Louise Cornelius Byers; and brothers, Carlton Cornelius and Wade David Cornelius.
He served with Headquarter and Headquarters Troop, 2nd Squadron, 11th Armor Calvary Regiment, "Blackhorse", USARV.
He was awarded The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, the Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
