John Hill Smith was the son of Col. Larkin Smith and Mary Eleanor Hill Smith.

On 7 Sep 1808 in Richmond, VA, John married Mary Cary Ambler daughter of Col. John Ambler and Frances Armistead Ambler.

Died- Near Dinwiddie County Courthouse, on March 28, John Hill Smith, in his 60th year. He was the son of Larkin Smith of King & Queen County, Speaker of the House of Delegates and later appointed Collector of the Port of Norfolk, by President Jefferson. John Hill Smith, served in the House of Delegates, as a lawyer in Lynchburg and later in Richmond. In Richmond he was elected a member of the Executive Council of State.
