Mission to England, 1837; Married Hannah Greenwood June 11, 1838 at Preston, Lancashire, England (sealed January 23, 1846 Nauvoo Temple). Presided over the British mission, 1838-40. Returned to Nauvoo, Illinois, 1841. Left Nauvoo in 1846 and arrived in Utah, 1848.

At Mill Creek Ward. Dec. 19, 1863, of lung fever, JOSEPH FIELDING, aged 63 years, 8 months and 22 days.
Deceased was born in Bedfordshire, England; he emigrated to Upper Canada in 1832, where he became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in May, 1836; was ordained a Priest in April, 1837; removed to Kirtland in May. He was appointed to accompany Elders Kimball and Hyde on their first mission to England, where he labored faithfully until they left, when he was appointed by them to preside over the English mission in April, 1838, when he was ordained a High Priest, having been ordained an Elder by Elder Kimball, Oct. 28, 1837, which office he filled with faithfulness and fidelity until 1841, when he was released and emigated to Nauvoo, where he remained until the Church left that place; he came to the Valley in 1848. As his life had been virtuous and useful, his death was peaceful and happy.
Alone dear father, shall we tread
The rest of life's rough way,
And can it be that thou art dead,
And could no longer stay.
As thou hast lived we'll try to live,
And die as thou hast died;
To wear the virtues of a saint
Shall be our only pride.

It has been noted that the death date on the pictured marker differs from the death date noted on this memorial. The Deseret News however and dozens of other historical and genealogical sources agree with the December 19th death date.
