Adam F. Grott Sr.
Adam F. Grott, Sr.,

AGE: 90 • Wilmington

Adam F. Grott, Sr., aged 90, surrounded by his loving family, went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 20, 2016. Born in the mining town of Beadling, PA, Adam moved with his family to the Browntown section of Wilmington during his early childhood in the late 1920s. He had fond memories of small town life in the mostly Polish community. His parents taught him the ethics of hard work and he entertained his family with his never-ending stories of picking coal as a child at the Wilmington Rail and Ship yards. After attending St. Elizabeth School and Bayard School, he began his career as a salesman "huckstering" produce from the back of a wagon or a truck. When huckstering "went out of style", he drove a truck for a local Wilmington merchant, Crowe's Seafood at 4th and King Streets, in the 1940s. He would go on to manage Crowe's Seafood, merging with Crowe's Produce forming one successful business, Crowe's Seafood and Produce, until 1991 when he retired. Retirement for Adam didn't mean lounging at the beach, it meant helping friends run businesses and being a caregiver for his sister, Mary. In other words, you can't keep a good man down! Adam proudly served his country during World War II on the USS Menard in the United States Navy. In the Pacific Theater he served combat missions to the Philippines. While serving on the The USS Menard, it closed the coast of Okinawa and boatloaded assault troops for the amphibious sweep to the invasion beaches. While off-loading support cargo, there were numerous antishipping strikes by Japanese bombing and suicide planes, these vital supply operations continued despite an enemy suicide plane attack from starboard. Intense gunfire from Menard splashed the enemy attack off the transport's port quarter. (www.ussmenard.com)

Adam was pre-deceased by his parents Antoni and Eleanor Grott, brothers Edward and Joseph Grott, sisters Mary Koper and Theresa Kozlaski, his daughter Patricia Wilson, step-daughter Maryanne Beaumont and step-son John Dobrinski. He was also pre-deceased by his former wife and gracious friend Margaret Arden. He is survived by his daughter and caregiver Christine Grott (Wilmington, DE), former daughter-in-law and caregiver Tania Fontana (Newark, DE), and daughter Lisa Arden (Marcus Hook, PA); Sons Daniel Arden (Richland, MO), and Adam Grott, Jr (Wilmington, DE); Step-daughters Barbara Seward (Marcus Hook, PA) and Diane D'Orazio (Wilmington, DE). He was blessed with many grand/step grandchildren including: Arianna, Chiara, Kenny, Laine, Joseph, and Danielle as well as 9 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and much extended family.

The family would like to give special recognition and gratitude to the nurses, doctors, staff and aides of Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center who cared for Adam with such compassion as if he were family. A special thank you to Drs. Sonya Tuerff, Stephanie Lee and Linda Ciavarelli for the professionalism and care they provided during critical times, again treating Adam with utmost respect and compassion.

Funeral services with military honors will be held on Monday, November 28th at 10 AM at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, Bear.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his memory to one of Adam's favorite charities: The Ministry of Caring, Emmanuel Dining Rooms.
