Kindergarten teacher and florist

GROTON -- Adelaide Mountain Luca, 99, of Groton, died peacefully on Monday, July 7, 2014, in her home on Blossom Lane with her loving and devoted husband, Aldo F. Luca, and family by her side.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on May 6, 1915, Adelaide came to Groton with her family in 1920 and made it her lifelong home. She was the first of five children of the late James P and Ethel (Davenport) Mountain.

Adelaide graduated high school from Groton's Prescott School. Soon after graduating, she married Richard A. Torrey in 1934 and began teaching kindergarten at her mother-in-law, Mrs. Frank Torrey's school in Groton. Later, she continued to teach and guide many of Groton's youngsters at the Unitarian Church kindergarten for over 18 years. She retired from teaching and later became the owner of the first Woodhaven Flower shop, where she greeted and welcomed customers for 30 years. After her first husband passed, she met Aldo F. Luca of New York and they were married in 1973. Adelaide was always proud to serve and contribute to her beloved town and community. She managed the dietary and housekeeping department at the Groton Hospital when it was first built. She was also an active member of the Groton Alliance of the First Parish Unitarian Church, and a member of The Reading Club of Groton.

Besides her husband, Aldo, Adelaide is survived by her stepdaughter, Linda Luca and husband, Gerard Tarpey; her stepson, Timothy Luca and wife, Rowena, granddaughters, Maria Luca and husband, Ben Madej; granddaughter Anne Luca; sister-in-law, Ann Mountain; loving nephews and their families: Philip Torrey, Jr, Robert Loiselle, James Mountain, Richard Mountain, Jr, Stewart Mountain; loving nieces: Laureen Sullivan, Andra Mountain, Pamela Mountain and their families.

Two sisters, Virginia M. Loiselle, Barbara Mountain, and two brothers, Lt. Colonel Benjamin Mountain of the U.S. Army, and Richard B. Mountain, preceded Adelaide in death.

LUCA -- At her request, there are no calling hours, A Graveside Service will be held at Groton Cemetery, Groton, MA on Friday, July 18, 2014 at 1:00 pm. There will be a gathering at the Groton Senior Center after the Service. Please see www.badgerfuneral.com
