Michael Franklin Alley, 73, of Fairland, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at Franciscan St. Francis Health in Indianapolis.
He was born Aug. 28, 1942, to Samuel J. Alley and Betty Franklin Herthel in Oaklandon.
Mike married Virginia J. Bass in July 1963, and from that union they had two children: George Michael Alley of Beech Grove; and Diana Hughes and her husband, Dan, of Cincinnati, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Callen and Madison.
Also surviving are longtime companion, Jane Wells, as well as Jane’s children: Roxanne Lemmon and her husband, Jeff, of Elkhart; and Jodie Moore of Shelbyville. Jane has five grandchildren: Ryan Wells and his wife, Sarah, of South Bend, and their three daughters; Sasha Lindwedel and her husband, Chris, of Elkhart, and their two daughters; Kyndra Phelps of Shelbyville, and her daughter; Miranda Lindwedel of Elkhart; and Brady of Shelbyville.
Other survivors include a sister, Patricia Batson and her husband, Dave, of Missouri; his aunt, Martha Noel and her husband, Luther, of Shelbyville; and three nephews, Greg Thomas of Chillicothe, Missouri, Gary Thomas of Indianapolis and Mark Batson of Louisville, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Herthel, and stepfather, Maurice Herthel; maternal grandmother, Tessie Young, and grandfather, Andy Young; his father, Samuel J. Alley; and his paternal grandparents, George and Esther Alley.
Mike graduated from Triton Central High School in 1960 and attended Nashville Diesel Mechanic School in Nashville, Tennessee.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran stationed on the USS Forrestal.
He was recently awarded the Volture Nationale 40/8 recognition award.
Mike was a member of the Shelbyville Police Force from 1971 to 1981. He later was employed at Detroit Allison in Indianapolis and General Motors in Weintzville, Missouri.
Returning to Shelbyville, he became the owner and operator of Mike’s Gun Shop.
He was a past member of the DeMolay, and current member of the Masons, as well as the Fraternal Order of Police and American Legion.
Mike was a member of St. Paul Christian Church.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2016, at Glenn E. George Funeral Home, 106 E. Franklin St., St. Paul, IN 47272.
Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Van Pelt Cemetery in Waldron. Graveside military services will be conducted by local veterans organizations.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Shelbyville/Shelby County Animal Shelter in care of the funeral home.
