William Judd passed away March, 2013 in West Lafayette, IN. He was born in Denver, CO in 1917 to Samuel and Lillian (Israelske) Judd. In 1942 he married Rachel E. Douglas of Austin, Texas. They enjoyed 70 years of marriage prior to her death in February, 2013. Survived by daughters Judy Soden, Jean Wadley, Dayna Grandmason, Pamela Judd and Connie Wolters and seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Bill graduated from Colorado University with a degree in Geological Engineering. His professional career included positions with Rio Grande Railroad, Bureau of Reclamation, Rand Corp. and Purdue University (where he developed one of the first departments of research and teaching in rock mechanics). He co-authored "Principles of Engineering Geology and Geotechnics," the definitive book in the field of rock mechanics, with Professor D.P. Krynine, Yale & Univ. of CA. As an international consultant in engineering geology he received many awards including the International Association of Geological Engineers Hans Closs Medal.

His avocations involved mountains, hiking and skiing. Founder and president, Southern Rocky Mntns. Ski Assoc.; founder, Rocky Mntn. Ski Patrol System; director, Ground Rescue Operations for the U.S. Air Force Search & Rescue Team; national director, National Ski Patrol System; director, 1960 Olympic Ski Patrol in Squaw Valley. Inducted into the Colorado and National Ski Museums Halls of Fame; recipient of 1954 Hallstead Trophy.

With wife, Rachel, built and ran a business featuring antique toys, first edition children's books, and porcelain and silver items.
