James was the son of Jeremiah Colclo and Sally Woods. He married Hannah Cretsinger on 6 December 1846 in Findley, Putnam, Ohio. They were the parents of Lodema (1847-1884, Alva Chambers, Dr Hiram Hoagland), Eliza (1850 - before 1880, Josephus Boon Hampton), Craton (1851 OH), Mary E (1854 OH), Alice (1857 IA), Virginia June (1860) Flora (1863, C.F. Caswell), Ermine Bell (1865-1866).

FROM CARROLL CO GENWEB - James H. Colclo settled in what is now Union township in 1856, locating upon a farm, where he resided until 1865, when the family removed to Carroll. He erected the first hotel in Carroll. (1) Colclo House was located in at the corner of Fifth and Main and later became Burke's Hotel. [3] Previous to the advent of the railroads (in 1867) he was for some time engaged in carrying the mail between Panora and Sioux City, and also carrying passengers. In 1870 elected sheriff of Carroll county, and was identified with the interests of the county until his death, which occurred in January, 1884.

James H. Colclo was a native of Ohio. He wife, who survived him (she died in 1894 [3]), was formerly Miss Hannah J. Cretsinger, a native of Virginia. There are five surviving children: Craton C.; Mrs. Anna Steigerwalt; Mrs. Alice E. Engleman; Jennie and Flora (the latter two being teachers in the public schools of Carroll. [1] Another daughter, Eliza (died before 1880), married Josephus Boone "Bud" Hampton on July 30, 1865, in Carrollton.

The Carroll Herald - Wednesday , January 24th, 1883 - Died at his residence in this place Saturday morning, January 20th. James H Colclo was born in Licking county, Ohio, July 21, 1822 and was nearly 61 years of age.

He moved to Madison county in this State in 1853, where he engaged in farming until 1856, when he moved to Carroll county, and carried the mail on the line from Panora to Sioux City. In 1861 he moved to Carrollton where he kept a hotel. He was active in the work of organizing this county and was its first Sheriff.

He removed to Carroll City in 1868 and built the third house in the town. Me died of consumption, with which he was affected for a long time. His death was very easy as he was not conscious for 24 hours previous. He was buried Monday afternoon.
