Her husband James enlisted in the 41st Mississippi Infantry Regiment in 1862, was captured in 1863, joined the US Navy in January 1864 and died in action on the USS Pequot in July 1864. Nancy and her young son returned to her father's household and they all moved to Madison County, Texas by September 1870.
Some time between late 1870 and 1872, Nancy remarried widower Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Goodman, also of Madison County, Texas. Nancy had a second child with Frank. In 1880, Nancy and Frank lived in Madison County, Texas with their daughter Nancy, five children Frank had with his deceased wife, and Nancy's father who was now 73 years old.
In 1900, Nancy lived alone next to her daughter "Nannie" Shehome and her family in Madison County, Texas. The 1900 Census notes that Nancy had a third child at some point that was deceased by 1900.
