After James got out of the Coast Guard he moved to Los Angels and took acting lessons. He later had a career in film and TV. He was in "Tombstone: The Town Too Tough To Die", "Gunsmoke" and "Dark Passages" with Humphrey Bogart. He was friends with Roy Rogers, Rita Hayworth, Jane Russell and Lou Costello. He was married to his first wife Stacy Nichols for 22 years. He second married Delma Troy who was later convicted of his murder along with her boyfriend Rick Kosterow and Donald White.
