Son of Jonathan Ellsworth and Sarah (Sally) Gallea. Husband of Elizabeth Young (m. July 10, 1842, Nauvoo, IL), Mary Ann Dudley (m. December 24, 1852, Salt Lake City, UT), Mary Ann Jones (m. October 10, 1856, Salt Lake City, UT) and Mary Ann Bates (m. October 10, 1856 Salt Lake City, UT).

Son-In-Law of President Brigham Young.

Captain of the "Edmund Ellsworth Company" that left Iowa for Utah on June 9, 1856, arriving in Utah on September 26th of the same year.

Arrested for polygamy in 1884.
