A redhead, Doris Betty Douglas Neely was an only child whose father was a fire chief in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. She was born Monday, October 24, 1927 in Savannah, the daughter of Elmo F. Douglas and Doris Morgan Douglas. On August 14, 1944 Betty married her high school sweetheart James Robert ("Robbie") Neely, Sr., and they had two sons, James ("Jim") Robert ("Bobby") Neely, Jr. and John Michael ("Mike") Neely. Years after their births Betty miscarried a baby girl. Betty worked as both a secretary at Fort Stewart and as a homemaker. In 1958 the family lived at 523 East Bolton, but in 1960 they moved to 2609 Mississippi Avenue in Savannah. Until their moms' deaths both Betty's and Robbie's mothers lived with them. At the time of her death, September 16, 2003, Betty and Robbie lived at 2609 Mississippi Avenue. At her request her body was donated to science. Information about her is located in the Neely family plot at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah. In addition to her two sons, she is survived by five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one niece. She died at age 75.
