Investor, Financier, Philanthropist, William was the oldest member of the Stock Exchange in point of service, founding his firm in 1881. William was born 02 September 1857, in Harrisburg, Pa. to Harris C & Margaret ( Nee' Mckinley ) Fahnestock. He came to New York at an early age and when he was 19 years old he obtained a position with the First National Bank. Mr. Fahnestock was a director of the New York Post-Graduate Medical School & Hospital and member of the board of managers of St. Luke's Hospital. In the last few years Mr. Fahnestock had withdrawn from several corporate boards which had long been accustomed to his presence. At his death he was still a member of the board of managers of the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Railroad Company, and director of the Gold Dust Corporation, New Jersey General Security Company, St Luke's Hospital, New York Post-Graduate School and Hospital, & Lackawanna Securities Corp. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Union League, Century Union, Riding, Racquet, and Tennis, Lawyers And Metropolitan. also a member of Misquamicut Gold Club of Watch Hill, Rhode Island. The Bedford Golf and Tennis Club of Tuxedo, N.Y. He Built the Newport Mansion, Bois Dore' who later was owned by Elinore Dorrance Hill of the Campbell Soup Fortune, & Oil Heiress Carolyn Mary Skelly of the Skelly Oil Fortune.
