Athens - James Inman Akins, Sr., 91, passed away on Monday, December 24, 2007.

A native of Bullock County, Mr. Akins was the son of the late James Lester and Anne Elizabeth Kennedy Akins. He was preceded in death by his spouse, Martha Patat Akins, and the wife of his children, Mary Emma Miller Akins. He had served as President and Chairman of the Board of Mathis Construction Company and Akins Concrete Inc. He was past president of the Athens Rotary Club, Chairman of the Board of Trustee's of the Athens First United Methodist Church, and served on the Board of Lanier Gardens. A member of the Athens Country Club, Mr. Akins was a veteran of WWII, and an active member of the Tuck Sunday School Class and First United Methodist Church. Survivors include son James I. "Buddy" Akins, Jr. and his wife Ronette of Vero Beach, Fla.; daughter Mary Beth McPeters of Pooler, Ga.; Glenda Jean Harrison and husband John of Athens, Ga.; Kay Cash and husband Rick of Jasper, Ga.; Faye Johnson and husband Mickey of Centerville, Ala.; Ginger Holland and husband Ken of Fayetteville, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11AM Thursday, December 27th, at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Dr. Bill Britt and Rev. Grady Wigley officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10AM until the funeral hour at Bernstein. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Tuck Sunday School, First United Methodist Church, 327 N. Lumpkin St., Athens, GA 30601.Members of the Tuck Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers. Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
