UNION CIVIL WAR SOLDIER. A SGT. IN CO B, 51ST PENN. INFANTRY.Civil War veteran Company B., 51st. Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Sgt. Alson Stocker served throughout the war. His unit fought at the Battle of Antietam at Burnside's Bridge. His unit was led by General John F. Hartranft who led the charge. General Hartranft was a Medal of Honor recipient and was later elected Governor of Pennsylvania.
Alson's unit also fought at the Battle of the Crater in Petersburg, Virginia. The battle is depicted in the movie Cedar Mountain.
Alson's brother Azariah Stocker moved to Phillipsburg, N.J. and is buried in the Phillipsburg Cemetery on Fillmore Street. His find-a-grave memorial number is 123334732.
Alson's grandfather George Stocker (1761-1811) was a Revolutionary War veteran.
Alson worked as a slater (slate roofer) in the slate belt region. He was born and raised in Northampton County, Pa. He lived in Warren County, N.J. for a few years before the Civil War where several of his children were born. After the Civil War, he lived primarily in Lower Mount Bethel Twp., Pa.
