Alexander graduated from Trinity College in 1872, studied abroad for three years, and ordained as a priest on December 19, 1877.
After serving in South Boston, New York City, and Washington, he was elected Coadjutor Bishop of Pennsylvania, consecrated in the position on May 1, 1902 at Trinity Church, Philadelphia. 

There is a cenotaph
for him in Washington, DC as well.
