The first record showing John Honaker is the 1850 Federal Census where his was living with his family in Pulaski County, Virginia. He was the son of Samuel (b. 1807 in Virginia) and Emilia (b. 1809 in Virginia). According to this census, his siblings included Eleanor, Oscar, Chester, Samuel, Henry & Elizabeth. By 1855, John relocated to Kentucky and on 20 October 1855, he married Octavio Arthur, the daughter of Eli Arthur & Margaret Shockey. The couple had 6 known children based on the census records: James (b. 1857), Chester (b. 1858), Cynthia (b. 1861), John (b. 1862), Margaret (b. 1865) & Hester (b. 1867).

On 9 August 1862, John Honaker enlisted in the Union Army in Covington, Kentucky and he served in the 10th Regiment, Kentucky Calvary, Company F. John mustered out as a corporal on 17 September 1863 in Maysville, Kentucky.
