George Joseph Riley, Jr. served in the United States Army during World War II. He was in the 12th Armored Divison which entered France on 11 November 1944. It took part in operations in Alsace and the Ardennes before entering Germany. The 12th Armored Division was the only unit in the American Army to fight a battle with the Germans as allies. The Nazis held several high-level dignitaries in detention at Schloss Idder in Kufstein, Austria. Elements of the German Wehrmacht fought with the Americans against the Nazi SS to free these prisoners. Among those liberated was Eduoard Deladier, who had been part of the negotiations at the Munich Conference in 1938.
