Robert "Bob" Frank Bohnker was born May 7, 1921, in Charter Oak, Iowa, the son of Hans and Hannah (Johnson) Bohnker. Robert died at the Denison Care Center on February 12, 2009, with family members at his side. Bob grew up living with his parents on farms near Vail and Charter Oak. He graduated from Charter Oak High School in 1938. He then farmed with his brother, Lyle near Ricketts, Iowa.

Bob was married to Mary Lou (Webster) of Minburn, Iowa, on July 29, 1949. This marriage was blessed with six children. After marriage, they farmed in the Charter Oak area until 1986 when they retired and moved to Denison, Iowa. Bob remained active in the Denison United Methodist Church and other community activities including the Kiwanis. Bob was also active in following his grandchildren in their sporting events.

Bob served his community throughout his life. He was an active member of the Charter Oak United Methodist Church and had many leadership roles in the church. Bob along with his wife helped organize and were the leaders of the Friendly Willow 4-H Club in Charter Oak for 17 years. He was active in helping all 4-Hers at the Charter Oak Achievement Days and the Crawford County Fair. He was active in the Crawford County Extension Service, Farm Bureau, Pork Producers and the Western Iowa Experimental Farm. After retirement Bob served for 12 years as a trustee of the Crawford County Hospital Board. For their many contributions, Bob and Mary Lou were recognized as the Charter Oak Citizens of the year in 2005.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents: Hans and Hannah (Johnson) Bohnker; his brothers: Lyle and Eugene; his sister Lois (Bohnker) Ledbetter; and a foster brother Sidney Johnson.

Bob is survived by his wife Mary Lou; four sons and two daughters: Kyle and his wife Joyce; Bruce and his wife Jackie; Arlys; John and his wife Jean; Robin and her husband Garry; Eric and his wife Tammie; as well as sixteen grandchildren. Other survivors include his sister Shirley and her husband John; his sister-in-law Lois; his sister-in-law Betsy; his brother-in-law Bobby; many nieces and nephews , as well as friends from throughout his life.

Bob looked to the future to help his community to be a better place to live. He loved his wife, his children and his grandchildren. He is remembered for his faith in God and his commitment to his family.

Funeral services were held at 2 P.M., Saturday, February 14, 2009, at First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Alberta Ervin officiated the service and graveside rites at Charter Oak Cemetery in Charter Oak, Iowa. Organist Jackie Bohnker provided accompaniment for hymns, "Because He Lives" and "May the Angels Be Your Guide," and for "On Eagles' Wings" and "The Lord's Prayer" by soloist Pat Christensen. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Kyle Bohnker, John Bohnker, Kent Bohnker, Larry Bohnker, John Webster, Bill Webster, Eric Bohnker, Bruce Bohnker, Keith Bohnker, Roger Webster and Richard Webster. Serving as pallbearers were Bob's grandchildren. The family invited everyone to join them for fellowship and lunch served by the Methodist Women. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
