US Congressman. He graduated from Amherst College in 1895, studied law with an attorney in Rome, New York and at Cornell University Law School, and became an attorney in Rochester, in 1897. In 1898 he moved to Brooklyn, where he continued to practice law. In 1904 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives as a Republican and served three terms, 1905 to 1911. He ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 1910 and returned to practicing law in Brooklyn. From 1912 to 1913 he was Kings County Sheriff. He served as a Municipal Court Judge from 1916 to 1926, then returned to practicing law and also became active in banking. He died of a heart attack while taking a midnight swim at his Lake George summer house, and was buried in his wife's hometown.
