Franklin C. Cornell, deceased, was a member of one of Ithaca's most prominent pioneer families. He was born here and educated in Ithaca Academy.
Throughout his life he had extensive agricultural interests and was one of the large land holders of Tompkins County. In 1891 he was one of the founders of the Ithaca Trust Company, in association with Mynderse Van Cleef, and he held the office of president of the institution until the date of his death, January 22, 1907.
His wife [Susan D. (Pettigrove) Cornell]was born at Owego,Tioga County, and died in 1891. Both are buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Ithaca.
Their children
were:
1. Eunice, married Charles L. Taylor.
2. Ezra, who died in Ithaca in 1906.
3. Dorothy, unmarried.
4. Frederick, who died in infancy.
5. Franklin C, the subject of this sketch.
All are residents of Ithaca.
Mr.Cornell was a trustee of Cornell University and a trustee of the Ithaca Savings Bank.
He was a Republican, held membership in the Episcopal Church, and Town and Gown Club.

Brother of Governor and Eldest Son of Cornell University's Founder
Franklin Cuthbert Cornell, aged 71 years, the eldest son of Ezra Cornell, founder of Cornell university, died while eating breakfast at his home, Forest Park, at the corner of Stewart and South avenues, at 11 o'clock this morning.
Mr. Cornell attended the wedding of Miss Catherine Reed and William Hart Storms, cashier of the Ithaca Trust company, of which the deceased was president, at the Episcopal chapel last evening. He did not complain of being ill at that time nor had he stated to any of his friends throughout the day that he was in other than his usual spirits.
When Mr. Cornell awakened this morning , he complained of pains in his arms and chest. He was requested by members of his family to keep to his bed but insisted on dressing. He asked that breakfast be made ready for him and he seated himself at the table a very few minutes before 11 o'clock. Just as he was about to eat a morsel of food, he fell over in his chair and died immediately, the cause being neuralgia of the heart.
The news of his death, which was shortly telephoned to the Ithaca Trust company, and to his friends throughout the city spread rapidly and sympathetic messages poured in upon the family from all sides.

Following his graduation, Mr. Cornell gave his time to caring for his father's stock and farming lands. He was much interested in this work, and preferred it to any other.
Upon the death of his father, in 1874, Mr. Cornell was appointed administrator of the estate, and managed it to a successful termination. Many intricate questions were involved, and Mr. Cornell showed his business capacity in the manner he handled the affairs.
He furthered the plans of his father, both in the university which had been founded and in overseeing the large lands and stock ownings. He resembled his father, not only in looks but also in temperament.
Franklin C. Cornell was married to Susan Pettigrove at Owego, on Jan. 16, 1862. Two sons and two daughters were born to them; one of the former is dead. Mrs. Cornell died a number of years ago.

He was chairman of the executive committee of Cornell university, and member of the finance committee of the same institution, a former president of the agricultural society, chairman of the finance committee and trustee of the Ithaca Savings bank, and a member of the board of education. He was a member of the local protective police.
He was a trustee of the Cornell Free library. He was a Republican, though not active in politics.
Mr. Cornell, who was a brother of former-Governor Alonzo B. Cornell, is survived by one son, Franklin C. Cornell, jr., of this city; two daughters, Miss Dorothy Cornell of this city and Mrs. Eunice Cornell Taylor of New York; one brother, O.H. Perry Cornell of Virginia, and two sisters, Mrs. Charles H. Blair and Miss Mary T. Cornell, both of Ithaca.

Apparently he was initially interred in the family vault in City Cemetery. I found an article about the funeral in the Ithaca Daily Journal; 25 Jan 1908, page 3. The last sentence said, "The remains were placed for the present in the Cornell vault in the city cemetery." Which indicates, of course, that at some time he was moved elsewhere.
