Funeral services for Joan Doyle Hicks, 87, of Wells will be held in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Hicks was born October 21, 1929 in Wells, Texas to the late Vallie (Staton) and Archie Doyle, and died Tuesday, November 1, 2016 in a local hospital.

Mrs. Hicks was a lifetime resident of Wells. She graduated as valedictorian from Wells High School in 1947 and attended Stephen F. Austin State University. Mrs. Hicks enjoyed gardening, reading, and cooking, and had the ability to make almost anything from scratch. She was known for her desserts. Her grandchildren were the light of her life.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Gary Ford; son and daughter-in-law, Ross and Joni Hicks; granddaughters, Camryn Seymore and husband Corey, and Kelsy Hicks; grandson and fiancée, Hadyn Hicks Ford and Samantha Gresham (and daughter Ele); great-grandson, Kanyon Ford Seymore; sisters-in-law, Iola Presnall, Mildred Hopper, and Rebecca Sparkman; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 54 years, Emmit Ferril Hicks; infant son, Emmit Doyle Hicks; sister-in-law, Jerry Brooks; brothers-in-law, J.B. Presnall, Merkel Hopper and J.W. Sparkman; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Odessa and J.D. Cates, Beth and John M. Hicks, and Carrie and C.C. “Jake” Hamilton.
