William was known as "Miller William", as he and his brother Robert ran a mill on McKee's Creek. He was a Revolutionary soldier, and was at the Battle of Raft Swamp. William married Abigail McEwen on August 4, 1785 in Mecklenburg county, North Carolina. He was an elder in the Rocky River Presbyterian Church, serving in that capacity until his death. William died suddenly of a stroke as he was riding home from Charlotte in his buggy.
