John Walter Dickens (also listed as Walter J Dickens) was born on March 21, 1888. He was the son of Allen and Lee Ann Dicken. He went by Walter for much of his life.

He may have been born in Kentucky; possibly either Cumberland County or Monroe County. According to the 1900 Federal census, Walter J Dicken was 12 years old and was listed as being born on March 1888 in Kentucky. At the time of the 1900 Federal census, father Alen Dickens aged 63; mother Luann Dickens aged 50; and siblings: Nancy E Dickens aged 18; Julia A Dickens aged 17; Sadia Dickens aged 15; as well as older brother William J Dickens aged 25 and wife Effie Dickens aged 18 with their baby son Walter C Dickens aged one month; were living in Martinsburg, Monroe County, Kentucky.

In other Federal censuses (1910, 1920 and 1940) Walter Dicken listed his state of birth as Kentucky. In the 1930 Federal census, he listed his state of birth as Tennessee. According to the WWI draft registration, John Walter Dicken listed his place of birth as Clay County, Tennessee. For the WWII draft registration, Walter Dickens listed his place of birth as Clay County, Tennessee.

Reviews of parents and siblings in the different Federal censuses indicate that everyone was born in Kentucky. The Indiana death certificate for John Walter Dickens indicates he was born in Indiana; but no where else is that information listed. It is not known why the discrepancy of the place of birth between Kentucky and Tennessee.

OBITUARY:

John Walter Dickens, 83, of 2022 Ohio street died Wednesday at the Extendicare convalescent center where he had been a patient for two years. Mr. Dickens, who retired 10 years ago as owner and operator of a used furniture store at 223 Third street, had been in ill health for five years.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Reed funeral home by the Rev. Charles Taylor. Persons may call after noon Thursday. Burial will be at Garland Brook cemetery.

Mr. Dickens was born in Clay County, Tenn., on March 21, 1888,, the son of Allan and Ann Farr Dickens. He spent his early life in Tennessee before moving to Mitchell in 1920 and Columbus in 1942. He was a member of the Methodist church at Mitchell.

Survivors include his wife, the former Cora Goad, whom he married in 1912, three sons, Kenneth Dickens of Hope, Ira Dickens of 2322 Wallace avenue, and Charles Dickens of Route 5; two daughters Mrs. Eve Jones of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Alma Lucas of 251 North Hughes street; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
