John E. Bliss Passed Away at the
Soldiers' Home in Danville,
Illinois, Monday.

News has been received here of the death of John E. Bliss, formerly of this city, which occurred Monday at the Soldiers' Home, Danville, Illinois. He was about 67 years of age.

Mr. Bliss came to Ottawa prior to 1876, and served as deputy postmaster through a number of administrations; he was in that capacity for Postmaster James Robb and also under J.B. Kessler. Later, he served one term as postmaster. In the interim, he was clerk in the Santa Fe offices. He secured a position as postoffice inspector about twenty years ago and was soon given an important position in the office at Chicago, which he retained until obliged, by failing health, to go to the Soldiers' Home at Danville.

Mr. Bliss served in the Union army. He enlisted as a private in Company B, 129 Indiana Infantry and was discharged as First Lieutenant and Quartermaster by reason of the close of the war. He was a member of George H. Thomas post. He leaves a son and daughter; his wife died a number of years ago.
