Elmer was born December 3, 1923 near St. Bernard, Nebraska to Max and Barbara (Hutchmacher) Babel. He received his education at. St. Bernard Catholic School. He served in the United States Army in the Philippines from June 20, 1944 until May 11, 1946. He returned home and worked in Omaha for a period of time. Elmer married Leona Gross in Earling, Iowa. They lived and farmed in the Humphrey, Nebraska area. In 1965 they moved to Columbus.

Son: Dean (Barb) Babel of Schuyler
Son: Clark Babel of Columbus
7 Grandchildren and 8 Great grandchildren
Sister: Marie Brakenhoff of Columbus
Sister: Rose Weiland of Madison
Brother: Lavern Babel of Norfolk
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Leona, daughter-in-law: Sandy Babel, brothers: Harold, Vic, Andy, Ralph, Eugene and 1 brother in infancy
