He attended his first 5 years of school in a one room schoolhouse. He graduated from Myrtle Creek High School, afterwards enlisting in the Navy during World War II. He married the love of his life Charlene Smith, and they were married for over 61 years.
Donald retired from Roseburg Forest Products (formerly Paul B. Hult Lumber Company) in 1989, and was a member of the local 2949 for over 65 years. He liked to hunt and fish. He was a member of the Myrtle Creek Nazarene Church, where he taught adult Sunday school classes for many years. He lived the last six and a half years at Callahan senior living.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene; and oldest son, Steve Smith.
He is survived by his daughter, Donna and her husband Lee Nelson; daughter, Deana and her husband Ken Jameson; son, Craig Smith and his wife Melva; daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Smith; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dean and Dolores Smith; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, November 5, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at the Myrtle Creek Nazarene Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Myrtle Creek Nazarene Church (with memo : “Donald Smith Memorial”) for Jason and Karen Courtney, Nazarene missionaries in Honduras.
