Raleigh Roper was the son of Charles Richardson "Charlie" Roper and Delia Caroline "Deely" Roland Roper (her name has been spelled Rowland but the correct spelling was Roland as her father's linage was from Germany).
He grew up in Burningtown, Macon County, NC where his father was a farmer and also held a singing school. His family loved to sing Gospel music.
Raleigh Judson Roper (age 22) wed Catherine Dills (age 19) (both of Macon Co, NC) on July 25, 1911 by J.H.Grant, Missionary Baptist Minister of the Gospel at Union Hill Church, Nantahala Township, Macon Co. NC.
Witnesses at the wedding: J.M. (?) Mashburn, J.R. (?) Mashburn, A.H. Wilson
Source: Copy of their original marriage certificate, Macon County, NC
Ten children were born to their union. The children are all linked to these parents' memorials.
Raleigh and Catherine lived in Burningtoen first, when their children were younger but it was rough there. Grady Dills came and moved the family to Briartown where they lived better off until all the children were grown. After that, Raleigh and Catherine moved back to Burningtown where they lived in the small square house across from Mt. Sinai Assembly of God Church. Grandchildren remember them at this house the longest. After that they moved on up the road and lived in a house on the left side of the road across the creek until they died; son Howard and his family lived a short ways past them on the right side of the road.
